As an early joiner of 1% for the Planet in 2007, every year we give cash to some phenomenal causes including, but not limited to East Bali Poverty Project, Friends of the Ventura River, Ocean Futures Society… See more here.

But when a natural disaster occurs, I seek a way to see some of my donations directly help the people affected. Last year, for example, we donated to Clean Ocean Action who were doing some great community rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy. This year the need is most dire in the Philippines, and 1% nonprofit partner Waves for Water, an org founded by fellow surfer Jon Rose, is helping get clean water to the people with their highly effective filter kits. See how they work and perhaps, if you would, even start your own fundraiser for W4W.

Jon shows the community how to use the Waves For Water filtration system.

I like to involve my customers in the giving process (since I’m doing it anyway via my 1% FTP pledge) to help grow the donation amount I can give. Today I donated $200, and to add to that, I will be donating 20% of all total sales between now and Friday at midnight (online and in the shop) to W4W. So 20% of what you spend goes to the cause. Even better, if you just want to donate directly, here is the link to do so: http://www.wavesforwater.org/project/typhoon-haiyan

Thank you for joining these efforts and making the world a better place.

Smiles from Ventura,
